Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A SHORTAGE of haulage facilities In. was complained of by farmers in the Pitney, Somerset, -area, stated Mr. W. J. Higgins, before the Western Licensing Authority on Monday, when Messrs. G. W. R. Higgins and Son, agricultural engineers, Pitney, applied for a

B licence. for two vehicles.

They wished to carry heavy machinery, seed and grain within a 160mile radius, fertilizers and feeding stuffs within 40 miles, building materials within 25 miles, and hay and straw within 75 miles.

Mr. Higgins said that the nearest railway station to his farm was 11miles away, and the nearest British Road Services facilities were at Taunton, 16-17 miles away, or Yeovil. Mr. C. J. Crang, director, Crang, Ltd., lIchester, agricultural contractors and farmers, supported the application. He said that his company farmed 1,800 acres and hired out bulldozers. It would be a great convenience if a local operator were available.

Mr. M. Hynds, assistant district manager, Bibby and Son, Ltd., said that his company required transport for feeding stuffs from Bridgwater within 20 miles.

B.R.S. and the railways objected to the application, which was granted but was restricted to the carriage of contractors' plant, road and building materials, and agricultural produce and requisites within 20 miles.
