THE Road Haulage Association will continue to Oppose the Transport (Disposal of Road Haulage Property) Bill, affirmed Mr. James Barrie, national chairman of the Association, speaking at The annual dinner of the Northern Area at Newcastle. upon Tyne last week.
The Government had acted precipitately, he alleged. It was true that there had been a long period of thought on the question of returning road transport to private enterprise, but in the end action seemed to have been taken without due regard to circumstances surrounding previous decisions.
The Bill still had to go to the House of Lords, the members of which held strong views in support of private enterprise, Mr. Barrie said.
" I am glad to say that at the present time the' Road Haulage Association is in a strong position as regards member ship. It could be stronger, both in membership and finances, so as to ensure it being a real influence for good in the road transport of the country, and consequently in trade and industrial development," he added.
Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, Northern Licensing• Authority, said that more than 4,00b of the applications which
regularly arrived at his office cable through the R.H.A. Northern Area. His
staff were greatly assisted by the
R.H.A,'s work, which had been especially valuable at the time of the railway strike. It was a good thing to have a strong association to co-ordinate many thousands of vehicles in the area. The Association did not always see eye to eye with him, said Mr. Hanlon, but if they always did. neither would be
doing their respective job.
More than 300 people were present.
DRIVERS' WAGES UP
J3agreement of the national joint council for the ballast and sand industry, the wages agreement in respect of drivers has been amended as from the beginning of the first full pay period after May 7. Class 1 drivers of vehicles under 12 tons gross laden weight will receive 3s. 71d. per hour, and Class 2 drivers, 3s_ 6Id. per hour. Drivers of vehicles over 12 tons gross laden weight will receive: Class 1, 3s. 9d. an hour; Class 2, 3s. 8d. an hour.
OBITUARY
WE regret to record the deaths of MR. JAMES 1VESoN and MR. JOHN H. BAKER,
Mr. Iveson was senior partner of Messrs. lveson and Son, hauliers and bus operators, of Esh Village,' County Durhain. He was 84.
Mr. Baker was a director of Messrs. G. and B. Bus Service, Quarrington Hilt, County Durham, which was started by his father some 40 years ago. He was 54.
