Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

HANSON is facing a mountain of uncompleted work after 50 subcontractors at its Aberdare site in South Wales walked out over rate cuts. Six have already had their contracts terminated after refusing to work following the aggregates company's decision to slash rates for loads and mileage many more fear the same will happen to them.

One subcontractor says they had asked the company to increase its rates because it had become too difficult to make a profit. Instead, he says, Hanson cut the rate for each load from £13 to £10 and reduced the mileage rate to 95p. costing them up to £40 a day.

-Six months ago we were struggling on the rate,he adds. "Then we got an increase up to £13 per load. We were told this wouldn't change. We have a letter now saying rates are changing from I March."

He adds that the subcontractors are now seeking legal advice. Another subbie. who wishes to remain anonymous, says he's angry that the company has told customers it will be "back to normal" by Wednesday But a Hanson spokesman insists all drivers were told that the initial rate increase was only temporary while glitches in a new delivery system were ironed out. He describes the group of subcontractors as a -vocal minorityand says the company would not assume everything would be back on track by a certain date.

He adds: "It's a serious worry. It's painful. We depend 100% on drivers to deliver materials."
