E An Irish haulier has been sentenced to 28 months jail following a traffic accident in which a 67-year-old pedestrian was killed. James O'Connor, 33, from Athy, Co Kildare, was convicted of driving through a red traffic light at Con Colbert Road, in West Dublin, on 29 March 1997.
A police sergeant gave evidence that O'Connor was driving "very fast" when he struck the pedestrian, who died instantly.
In mitigation, the court heard that O'Connor had no convictions, and admitted at the scene that he was the driver. He was also due to marry soon.
The judge disqualified him
from driving for 12 years and jailed Km for 28 months, with no suspension of the sentence.
The judge said the killing of the victim was not premeditated, but O'Connor was driving too fast at the time.
• A second driver has pleaded guilty to three thefts of Microsoft Windows software from the premises of Meadow Freight in Co Meath on dates in 1996 and 1997. Derek Bailey, 38, who had formerly driven for the firm, arranged the thefts. He has been remanded in custody for sentencing on 19 March.
Darren Kavanagh, 24, has already been jailed for 18 months for his part in driving a truck involved in the robberies.
