Records broken

GLASGOW Containerbase broke all its cargo handling records last week when 2,200 tons passed through the inland clearance depot at Braehead.

Containerbase general manager Jerry Parkin attributed the new record to an overnight demand for shipping services, following a fire at the Braehead depot.

Bradford depot

OPERATOR and freight forwarder John Sutcliffe and Son is to open a new depot at Bradford with 10,000sqft of purpose-built warehouse and office accommodation.

The new depot will have full loading facilities for containers and trailers, with four tailboard loading bays and two floor-level bays. It is hoped that the expansion will aid the company's international business.

Fuel control

H. G. BROWN International Trucking has installed the first of a series of Autofuel Fleetmeters at its refuelling depot in Calais.

The company operates 10 refuelling points throughout France and claims the new system will allow a greater stock control accuracy than has been possible in the past.

Transport guests

INSTITUTE of Road Transport Engineers past presidents, Earl Howe and Lord Black entertained the honorary fellows of the IRTE last week. Guests included Transport Under Secretary John Horam, Sir Thomas Padmore. Sir William Swallow and Stan Mellgren.

M63 tail-backs

HEAVY goods vehicles are to be confined to the inside lanes of the two-lane section of the M63 bridge at Barton near Eccles — and there are fears that the arrangement will lead to long queues blocking slip roads. At present, traffic jams tail-back from approaches to the bridge, which carries traffic over the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Mersey.
