Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE case before the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners on February 2 (COMMERCIAL MOTOR, February 4) when York Corporation did not support its joint partner, West Yorkshire Road Car Co. Ltd. in an increased fares application for the York-West Yorkshire city undertaking, has had repercussions.

Speaking at the executive council of the York Conservative Association last week, Ald. Richard Scruton, leader of the Conservative group on York City Council, attacked the Labour opposition on the Council for what he alleged were its "dishonest and disgusting" tactics over the proposed fares increases.

In an answer to a question, Aid. Scruton said the matter was discussed by the Corporation transport committee prior to the hearing and the company's reasons for the proposed increases—mainly higher costs and wages—were known.

The committee was unanimous in agreeing that the increases must be allowed. Aid. Scruton added that among those giving approval were two Labour members, Aid. Burke (leader of the Labour group on the Council) and Ca. Riches. Yet when the matter was brought up for confirmation at the next meeting of the full Council, both of them voted against the increases.

"That I call dishonest and disgusting", said Ald. Scruton.
