PXPEDITION and Quality of Workmanship are Governed Largely by the Nature of "1--: the Equipment at the Disposal Of the Operator. On this, and the Following [Page are Details 4 Maintenance Units which are Representative of the Latest Developments in Their Respective Classes, and the Acquisition of which will make for Greater Efficiency.

Hydraulic Pit Jack.

THE facilities provided by an inspection pit cannot he fully exploited unless the equipment employed be of a suitable type. • Safely to remove a rear axle, or a trolleYbus motor; with the vehicle standing over a pit suggests the need for a long-reach jack with a platform head, such as that for which the Equipment and Engineering Co., Ltd., 2-3, Norfolk Street, London, W.C.2, is responsible.

An accompanying illustration gives a clear impression of this piece of equipment, which is of the hydraulic pattern, with either a single or double telescopic ram, according to type.

The bogie frame is built up of steel channel mounted on six rollers, including two small outrigger rollers, the latter imparting increased stability.

A useful feature is found in the crosstraversing arrangement, whereby the jack proper can be moved from side to side independently of the bogie.

In the case of the type A jack the ram gives a 20-in, lift, and with type B 36 ins. The respective prices are £50 10s. and op 18s. 9d.

' A Self-contained Spraying Unit.

WHERE any considerable amount of W spray painting is carried out, some form of self-contained portable equipment becomes an economical investment. Of the several types available from B.E.N. Patents, Ltd., Gorst Road, London, NAVA°, the one illus trated is known as the B.E.N. Pneu Spray. . This unit incorporates the company's. Al compressor, the drive to which is by V-belting from a h.p. electric motor. It is specifically designed for use with the B.E.N. model G or D. 3-1-in. spray guns, which it will operate n36 continuously at 50 lb. per sq. in. Two important claims made for this plant are that it is quiet running and vibrationless.

The prices of the electrically driven models vary from £35 7s. 6d. to £46 Zs., and of the petrol-engined units, from £42 17s. ed. to £54 Ss.

An All-purpose Portable Bench.

APORTABLE bench is an essential in any repair or maintenance

depot. Not only does it enable the operator to get at his work from all sides, but the fact that it can be moved to the scene of operations is responsible for considerable time saving.

The example shown in an accompanying 'illustration is made by Mann, Egerton and Co., Ltd:: 5,prince of Wales Read, Norwich. It will be seen that there is a high and low-level seetibri to the bench, the latter being particularly useful in that it enables the mechanic' to get well over hi; work. .The highlevel portion is arranged at the correct height for viee work.. .

• Angle-iron is used for the framework, the bench tops being in Weed. The whole of the lower portion is_covered:.to form a shelf,a. second shelf being arranged beneath the vice bench. A drawer, tool rack and a tray for the reception of split pins, bolts, nuts, etc., form part of the equipment.

To render the bench more convenient to move about, folding handles are pro vided at one end. Its dimensions are ; Length, 5 ft. ; width, 2 ft. 6 ins. ; and height, 2 ft. 8 ins. Known as the M.E. portable bench, it sells for £5 15s., the vice being £1 5s. extra.

Keep Your Batteries Charged.

Q TARTING up during cold weather, in conjunction with the heavy demands made on the battery for

. over long periods, tends to keep this unit at a low state of charge. In order to ensure ample current for starting up, an over-night battery charger is worthy of consideration, particularly in view of the reasonable price at which such a component may be obtained..

Philips Lamps, Ltd., 145, Charing Cross Road, London, W.C.2, is responsible for a serviceable Unit, con-, sisting of a double-wound mains transformer, used in conjunction with valve rectification. • These instruments can be supplied for voltages of from 200 to 250, all for 50-cycle circuits. Philips'

chargers are available for either 12-volt or 6-volt batteries, the charging rate in both cases being approximately 1.5 amps. ; the price is 42s. 6d.

Simplifying Tyre Repairs.

UNLESS any operator be possessed of specialized knowledge, attempts to vulcanize a tyre may easily result in the tyre being ruined. The most important consideration is to attain and maintain a minimum temperature, and thus, in apparatus . intended for use by the unskilled, automatic temperature control is a necessity.

A vulcanizer of this type has recently been introduced by A. Schrader's Son Division of Scovin Manufacturing Co., 829, Tyburn Road, Erdington. Birmingham. The heating unit will operate on either A.G. or D.C. supply, the current consumption being approximately 200 watts. The standard production is for 220-240 volts, but vulcanizers suitable for other voltages can be supplied.

This Schrader machine is suitable for the treatment not only of tube repairs. but is designed to permit the curing of rubber base and rubber-covered valves on to a tube.

In connection with the application of patches to a tube, the operator need not concern himself with the size or make of patch, as the control definitely prevents overheating.

Electro-plating Made Easy.

• THE cost of equipment suitable for 1 carrying out the deposition of chromium, nickel or copper is usually such as to make it prohibitive to any but those concerns specializing in the work. The introduction of the Easydun plant by Messrs. Runbaken Electrical Products, 280, Deansgate, Manchester, 3, has, however, made such facilities available for even the most modest maintenance depots. Furthermore, it is claimed that no skill or previous • experience is required to obtain results which compare favourably with those obtained with installations costing much more money.

There are two models, the prices of which are £7 10s, for mains operation, and £5 for the battery outfit. In connection' with the latter, a 6-volt or a 12-volt starter battery will provide ample current. For the model suitable for chromium plating, £2 10s, extra is charged.
