" I insist on a complete and thorough record being kept of the hours worked by these drivers. It is not a matter of one careless driver— there is a whole issue of them.' These remarks were made by Mr. W. W. Allan, Procurator-Fiscal, at Airdrie Sheriff Court, last week, when Messrs. Alexander Ross and Sons, 16, Coats Street, Coatbridge, admitted having committed offences relating to drivers' hours.

The firm were charged with permitting nine drivers to drive for continuous, periods of more than 5i hours, being liable to fines of £20 for each offence, and with having failed to keep log books in order on six different occasions, being liable to fines of RS for each offence. Three of the charges in which the drivers had exceeded 5+ hours were withdrawn, and the Sheriff imposed a cumulative fine of RS.

Auto-Trucks for Empire Exhibition.

The 10 miles of roads at the Empire Exhibition in . Bellahouston Park, Glasgow, will be covered by a service of 50 Auto-Trucks with trailers. These vehicles (to be supplied by R. A. Lister and Co:, Ltd., Dursley) have proved their usefulness at several important exhibitions. At the Johannesburg Exhibition in 1936, 30 of them were in daily use.

Controlling Confusing Electric Signs.

Representatives of the Metropolitan Boroughs Standing Joint Committee, together with officers of the London and Middlesex County Councils, have interviewed officials of the Ministry of Transport regarding the control of the colour of illuminated signs in close proximity to traffic signals, or those

exhibited along main roads. Reference was made to the greatly increased number of signs, the colours of which were often glaring, and which, as they were most abundant at intersections and junctions, caused confusion to drivers. The Ministry undertook to give further consideration to the suggestion that additional powers of control be granted to highway authorities.

Council to Take Over Dornie Ferry.

At a meeting of Ross and Cromarty Highways Committee, last week, it was decided that the county council should take over the operation of the Dornie Ferry as from May, when the present lease expires. It was stated that the bridge would not be open until 1939.

It was agreed that the Ministry of Transport should he asked to incorporate the old bridge with the new. The method to be used for manipulating the opening span of the Dornie Bridge was discussed and it was decided to proceed with the construction of a manually operated span, a letter from the' Ministry of Transport being submitted which stated that it could not sanction the expenditure of £1,500 to provide a mechanical means for moving the span.
