that is exactly what Stuart Ferneyhough faced when he was making a parcel drop to a house in Gloucester earlier this year.

As the owner of the house opened the front door, a fully grown Alsatian rushed past and sank its teeth into Stuart's arm.

He says. By the time we managed to get it off me, it had punctured a vein and blood was pouring out; I needed to do something quickly."

Not only had Stuart done his first aid training, but he used to work for St John Ambulance — so there could have been few people more qualified to attempt a little self-management in a crisis.

Stuart applied pressure to his arm, lifted it above his head (above the heart), to minimise blood loss and telephoned his wife, Heather, to come and get him and take him to hospital.

A few weeks after the incident he is OK, If a little scarred, but he is very glad he had sufficient first aid knowledge to take immediate steps to help himself.

He is already back at work for the parcels delivery firm, but rarely has he been more grateful that he had first aid training.
