• Bob liope, managing director of the UK arm of Disc Lock, has condemned the new BSI proposals on wheel stud fixings: "The standard doesn't affect existing nuts and the main recommendation is to oil them," he says.
Don Wright, chairman of the BSI committee says that the standard goes far beyond simple lubrication but agrees that: "nothing meets the standard without lubrication".
While Wright thinks the new nut is a good idea he says that before the standard could be amended to include it "we need a lab report that shows it is effective".
Lab tests have been carried out in America — but on vibration rigs which the committee feels do not reflect conditions on the road. Hope counters this by saying: "They haven't done a road test to see if the wheels will still fall off.
"You can't simulate in a laboratory what happens on the road", he says. Disc Lock says it has carried out road trials proving its products work in "real life."
