• Kevin Charlton, former general manager of Lovers Lane Transport, has lost a claim for unfair dismissal before a Manchester Tribunal.
Charlton considered that he had been sacked. He had walked out on 30 July and returned to work next day but was told to go home. The tribunal considered the dismissal to be reasonable. Despite being specifically instructed by the owner's wife, Elizabeth Walsh, to contact a list of potential customers, Charlton failed to do so.
Charlton then said that he would take two days holiday because Mrs Walsh was screaming and shouting at him. She told him that he did not have permission for this, but he still left.
The tribunal considered that deliberately disobeying orders from the owner of the business, and leaving without permission, was gross misconduct.
