• Associated Vehicle Industries of Flamstead, Herts, the new distributor for Dutch-built Terberg specialist trucks, expects to get its first vehicle type approved within two weeks.

The 9.5-tonne FI.1350 6x6 forward-control chassis is plated for off-highway use at 40 tonnes GVW, but from next January with centre-pivoted laminated rubber bogie suspension it will qualify for on-road operation at 26 tonnes.

Bucking current trends AVI is to hold chassis in stock, alto wing immediate delivery. The Terberg 6x6 is priced at £59,000 in either left or righthand drive.

A 20-tonne Terberg FL1150 4x4 is planned for the autumn. Like most Terbergs, other than dock-shunting tractors, the 6x6 and 4x4s use Volvo engines and cabs. The 193kW (260hp) TD73ES-engined four-wheeler is also available with a Volvo SR1400 14-speed gearbox.

But for the 6x6 with the 237kW (318hp) TD102FL engine, and the 295kW (395hp) TD122FL as an option, ZF's 16speed 16S150 Ecosplit is specified.

A Steyr twospeed transfer box drives through to Rockwell-SOMA hub-reduction axles front and rear, allowing the front axle to be disengaged for on-road operation.

Volvo's FL7/10 cab sits much higher on the straight Terberg chassis and needs deep wing valances. Chassis height is also affected by the choice of wheel/tyre equipment: the norm is 14.00 or 16.00R20 traction-tread singles all round but 13R22.5 on twin rears are available.

Managing director Nigel Allison expects to sell about 10 Terbergs this year and 20 in 1993, competing against the bonneted MAN and IvecoMagirus 6x6 and 4x4 machines.
