Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A boom extension mechanism operated by a double-acting triple-extension hydraulic ram gear and a geometry that enables a load to be placed close to the king-post are features of a range of four Pesci truck loaders with capacities of approximately 5, 6, 7 and 17 tons for which Welford Engineering Ltd, Hainge Road, Tividale, Warley, Worcs, is the sole concessionaire in the UK.

The loaders are produced by the Carlo Pesci Company of Italy, and vehicles equipped with a 5-ton and 17-ton loader were demonstrated to the Press recently. Welford considers that the 17-ton model is particularly suitable for mobile crane applications by crane-hire companies and as a loader by operators handling heavy machine tools. The loader can readily be used to elevate a tipping body up to the maximum angle of tip. Called Muscle loaders by Welford, the machines are competitive on a cost-effective basis with loaders made in this country.

While the 5-, 6and 7-ton models are fitted with hydraulically operated manually extended stabilizers at the front, the equipment of a 17-ton machine has additional stabilizers at the rear, and all the

stabilizers are hydraulically extended. Two hydraulic rams are fitted to the extendable boom of the 17-ton model in place of the single ram of the smaller machines. Stewing through 360deg is produced by an hydraulically operated rack-and-pinion mechanism in every case. The two elevating rams are single-acting single-ram gears and all the ram tubes are chromium plated.

Accessories include an orange-peel grab, a brick grab, a sand/gravel/coal grab, a pallet fork, pipe hook and log grab. Manually controlled and hydraulically controlled extensions are available and grabs may be fitted with an hydraulically' controlled rotation mechanism. Options also include an operator's seat attached to the king-post which is commonly required when waste is being loaded with the aid of an orange-peel grab. Weights of the four models are 1550kg (34001b), 1650kg (36301b), 1750kg (38501b) and 3170kg (70001b) respectively.

The 5-ton model, the P555, can operate at its rated lifting capacity of 5300kg (11,7001b) with a side reach of 2.5m (8.2ft) and can lift 1800kg (3960Ib) at 5m (I6ft). A weight of 600kg (13201b) can be lifted at a reach of 9.5m (31.311) or can be raised to llm (36ft) at a reach of 4m (13ft).

At the upper end of the model range, the 17-ton machine (the PI700) has a rated capacity of 1750kg (38501b) at a side reach of 2m (6.5ft), 7000kg (15,4001b) at 4.5m (14.811), 2000kg (44001b) at 10m (3311) and (with an extension fitted) 1500kg (33001b) at 12.75m (4211). It can lift 1500kg to a height of 15.5m (511I) at a reach of 2.5m (8.25ft).

A particular feature of a Muscle loader that Welford claims as a special advantage in many applications is that it can "swan neck" over the front of the cab and pick up a load close to the cab.
