Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Tram I burn instituted, some two Passengers . . . . months ago, an interesting experiment to test public honesty. What were termed "honesty boxes" were placed in buses and trams, the idea being that if a passenger were overlooked by the conductress he could drop his coppers into the box and proceed on his way with a clear conscience. Up to last week the receipts were 5d, on one bus and 19s. on ote tram. These sums have not defrayed even the initial cost of the boxes. The questions arise as to whether trawl User are more honest than bus travellers, or Whether the conductresses can cope better with their punching on the buses. Worn Steel Bearingc AN interesting point con May Be Cause of Tyre cerning tyre wear come,a.

Failure from a recent issue of "Transport Topics," of Washington. Goodyear engineers have discovered that • chipped and worn steel bearings are the cause of premature failure of many lorry, and trailer tyre's. The main trouble has been the tendency to form flat spots, a fault which has plagued trailer operators for many years. In one fleet of nearly 500, the engineers found two barrelfuls of bad bearings. It was claimed that these had the effect of wearing out 146 tyres before they had yielded their maximum potential service. This disclosure is certainly an entirely new angle on tyre wear.

Maker Raises Two WITH reference to the Points on Filtering VI' article, '' Ensuring a Arrangements . • . Trouble-free Oil Engine," pub lished on May 21, Stream-Line Filters, Ltd., has asked us to point out that counterboring and enlarging of the metering jet of the M.C.7 filter have already been carried out with recent examples of this model. The advice applies, therefore, only to the older 'users, and, even then, only with due regard to the type of engine, and the company should always be consulted. Incidentally, in connection with our humorous illustration in the same issue, the company suggests that we point out that it is important to emphasize that the ordinary gas mask gives no protection whatever from carbon-monoxide poisoning, although, of course, it is realized that the cartoon was not intended to be .taken seriously.

Tyre Economy ExhibipotIRMINGHAM now has it& tion for Operators In 1-1 own Tyre Economy ExtibiBirmingham . . • . tion for drivers and transport

operatives. It is situated at the Grand Hotel and was opened on May 27 by Lord Rothes, Director of Tyres, Ministry of Supply. Amongst other points, he mentioned that the quantity of rubber used in tyres may be reduced, and other materials substituted, without debasing the quality below the economic Jevel. At present only one out of three covers returned is fit for retreading. This is a higher proportion than was the case some months ago, but is still far too low, as in some of the bestmaintained fleets the proportion is seven out of ten. He paid a high tribute to the tyre-making and retreading industries, in which much of the work is laborious and monotonous.
