COMMENTING upon the new system of placing exports on a percentage basis rather than on a 'fixed quota, Sir William Routes, K.B.E., chairman of the Routes Group, stated that it would give greater flexibility. Assuming that more vehicles can be produced as a result of additional material being made available, there should be more vehicles for export -and for the home market.

He added that the industry and the Government now had a twin responsibility. We must, all, Government and workers, help in producing more economically and selling energetically. The Government must make materials available at home and fight more vigorously for our interests in markets which are artificially restricted by import or currency regulations.

LONDON'S LAST TRAM

ONDON'S last tram will run to1-4 morrow night when the final stage of the capital's conversion scheme comes into effect. Six tram routes will be withdrawn and four new bus routes introduced, in addition, seven other bus services will be modified.

A total of 162 trams will be abandoned at this stage, bringing the grand total since the commencement of the conversion programme to 737; 114 new buses will be put on the road, making 768 since the beginning of the scheme.

SCOTTISH L.A. DECISION DISPUTED

DOTH Scottish Omnibuses, Ltd., and ILA Ribble Motor Services, Ltd.., have appealed against the decision of the Scottish Licensing Authority limiting the number of duplicates on the allnight Edinburgh-Liverpool express service to one in each direction. The appellants are seeking the removal of the restrictions imposed by the -Licensing Authority; and permission to run not fewer 'than 18 vehicles in each direction.

ANNIS TO APPEAL

AN appeal is shortly to be lodged by Annis and Co., Ltd., Hayes, against the refusal by the Metropolitan Licensing Authority of its application to operate a 45-ton and two 25-ton articulated vehicles under an A licence.

The Authority was not satisfied with the evidence of need produced in support of the application. and in his written decision pointed out to the company the importance of compliance with the Authorization of Special Types Order.

NO BAR ON OVER-70s?

AT the extraordinary general meeting of the Traders' Road Transport Association on July 23, it will be proposed that representatives aged over 70 should not be debarred from membership of the National Council. The word " not " was omitted from the report in last week's issue.
