AGREEMENTS have been signed by representatives of London Transport and the Transport and General Workers' Union for improved conditions of service for the traffic and maintenance staffs of the Board. The principal feature of the new agreements is the reduction in the standard week from 48 or 47 hours to 44 hours, without reduction in the weekly rates of pay.

In addition to the present two weeks' holiday, an additional day's holiday with pay will be given in respect of each of the six public holidays on which staff are required to work or are available for work.

The new agreements operate as from last week, but it will take approximately four months for the duty schedules for the traffic staffs to be prepared on the new basis of the shorter working day.

It has, therefore, been agreed that, pending the completion of the new schedules, special overtime payments will be made on the existing schedules.

The Board and the Union recognize that, in the present shortage of manpower, it will not be possible to find additional staff required to work the new schedules, and it has been agreed that arrangements will be made to cover the new schedules by overtime working, until the man-power position permits of the recruitment of additional staff for the Board.

Many of the men are dissatisfied with the new terms and demanded time-anda-half payment for work on Sundays. There was, at the time of closing for press, the possibility of a strike by some workers next Sunday, unless their requirements are met.
