You'd think that, given the option, operators would want the best payload possible. But plenty of people appreciate the versatility of 6-11 t LCVs.

When buying a light truck, size isn't everything, which is why the 6l I t CV class is alive and well. Although the sector is traditionally dominated by Daf's LF45 and Iveco's Eurocargo, MAN has stepped up to the plate with its TGL. which aims to usurp the established leaders.

The early signs are that the newcomer's got what it takes to rival the established names, too, so expect it to cause a shake-up in the charts before long.

Sharp driving ability and a driver-friendly cab give theTGL realworld ability and it should start making its presence felt in the sales charts before long.

The same goes for the Mercedes Atego, thanks to its broad product range which manages to cover most bases.

Elsewhere, Mitsubishi's Canter has benefited from the effect of DaimlerChrysler's investment, gaining significant improvements and greater respect along the way.

Iveco's long-awaited Daily replace ment has switched its contender from an also-ran to a viable alternative for a small truck, thanks to its commendable road manners and sharp packaging.

Another two champions of the panel-van cause are Renault's sturdy Mascott and Mercedes' ageing but popular Vario, the latter's presence due more to nostalgia than anything else.
