There's only one name more synonymous with off-roading than Land Rover and that's Jeep, which has nearly a decade more heritage under its bonnet. Its sole UK commercial product is the Pioneer, based on the now defunct Cherokee Sport SUV but sales of the van will continue well into 2007.
As an off-roader, its heritage and relatively sophisticated transmission suggest it will cope with most situations, and it doesn't disappoint. As a car, two seats notwithstanding, it provides a comfortable if gloomy environment and surprisingly well-behaved road manners, eventually giving way to some safe understeer. Economy from the common-rail engine is just about acceptable for an American, while its power is delivered seamlessly to give sporty feeling performance. Its biggest downfall is its puny 359kg payload.
