Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CRITICISM of the extra Is. tax on ‘.--• fuel was voiced by Mr. R. P. Beddow, chairman, at the annual meeting of the East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd., last week. He pointed out that the effect of increasing taxation was to raise fares, and these were already high. "If, for administrative reasons, it was difficult not to impose an additional tax on private motorists alone, why should not a rebate of tax have been applied to our industry instead of fares being forced still higher?" Mr. Beddow asked. In comparing the results for the past year with those for the year before, the extremely poor weather experienced almost throughout last summer should be borne in mind, he said. They were largely dependent on the summer weather for their results. The company had also been adversely affected by a continuation of rising costs. Local rates had more than doubled. Although there was no evidence that the bus station which the company have been using at Folkestone since July, 1955, attracted additional passengers to their services, they were satisfied that it was well justified.

CLEAN AIR ACT IN FORCE

ON Monday certain provisions of the Clean Air Act, 1956, came into effect, and local authorities are now empowered to establish smoke-control areas in which smoke from buildings will be strictly curtailed or banned altogether. Progress will be governed by the supply of smokeless fuel and the rate at which fireplaces can be converted, for which process a 70-per-cent. grant will be made. Notice of intention to install any new furnace • must be given to a local authority. Further provisions of the Act dealing with smoke from industrial chimneys may be brought into effect early in 1958.
