QN Monday many member companies of the West Midland Division of the Traders' Road Transport Association were inquiring about the transfer of long-distance traffic to the railways. One company asked for 24 containers a week and were offered about six.

Mr. M. V. Allman, Shobden, Stafford, an owner-driver haulier who has a 15-tonner and normally uses 75-100 gal. of oil fuel a week, has been refused a supplementary ration because the Commissioner considers that his work could be done by rail.

A Tipton haulage concern with 10 vehicles, which normally consume 2,000 gal. a month, have a basic ration of 834 gal. and a supplementary allowance of 230 gal, for four months. One lorry carries steel to London and another transports nuclear power equipment.

Another haulage company's basic ration is sufficient to cover 8 per cent. of normal mileage.

Ernest Batley, Ltd., Coventry, makers of garage buildings, have been refused supplementary fuel for their ancillary fleet and have appealed to the Regional Transport Commissioner. Production may be affected.
