Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MERCEDES-BENZ UK has celebrated its 10th anniversary with record sales of commercial vehicles and cars, but the Daimler-Benz subsidiary's results for 1983 are likely to show a further decline in net profits.

This is being attributed partly to the strength of the Deutschmark against Sterling early in 1983 and partly to the keen competition for commercial vehicle sales in the UK which has led to heavy discounting.

Speaking in London last week MB UK managing director Hans Tauscher defended his company against accusations of "buying in" to the UK commercial vehicle market.

"The hard bargains in the truck market are putting the existence of effective dealer networks in jeopardy," he said, reiterating the words of his predecessor Erich Krampe from two years earlier. "I would suggest that operators would be well advised to do business with dealers who are prepared to put forward a keen quotation, but refuse to trade on suicidal terms."

Mercedes-Benz (UK) was founded in January 1974 when Daimler-Benz took over the importing company, then called Mercedes-Benz (GB) which was part of the Thomas Tilling group.

In 1974 2,000 Mercedes commercial vehicles were registered in the UK. In 1983 just over 10,000 were registered giving Mercedes a 9.8 per cent share of the 3.5-tonne plus UK market and making the Daimler-Benz subsidiary the leading importer.
