FOR approximately 12 months Glasgow Corporation Transport has been operating a Leyland Panther single-deck rear-engined bus on experimental service to assess the performance of a German Voith Diwabus 200 S fully automatic transmission, and Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, general manager of the undertaking, reports that fuel consumption is "surprisingly good". The bus seats 43 passengers and can accommodate 21 standees. Mileage to date is about 20,000.
At low speeds the Diwabus transmission affords a division of torque between an hydraulic torque converter and a differential mechanical gear and at higher speeds power is transmitted entirely mechanically.
