DLANS to expand the activities of the North 1Staffordshire Hauliers Association following the Road Haulage Association national council's decision not to interfere with the West Midland area action in closing the Potteries sub-area office (COMMERCIAL MOTOR, last week), are expected to be discussed next week.

The RHA national council decided last week that the subject of a Potteries office was a matter for the West Midland area. The council felt it could not interfere with the area's action in closing the Potteries office as part of reorganization within the West Midland area.

Members of the newly-formed North Staffordshire Hauliers Association had hoped the national council would decide either to reopen the subarea office at Burslem or to grant the Potteries full area status.

On Wednesday the member of the NSHA said COMMERCIAL MOTOR had give,n them the first detailed information of the national council's decision. They were surprised a decision had been taken without any consultation with Potteries hauliers, who are not represented on the area committee or nationally. Sub-area officials resigned en bloc last year in protest against the decision to transfer their local office facilities to Tipton, 40 miles away.

Over 160 hauliers in the area completed a questionnaire issued by R. G. Bassett, when Potteries sub-area chairman, asking whether they would leave the RHA if the Potteries office were closed. Now over 100, including (it is understood) all the large operators in the Potteries, have already confirmed their intention to join the North Staffordshire Hauliers Association. Subscriptions equivalent to RHA rates are being received by the new Association.
