'THREE Leyland Comet tippers °per' ated by the Van Ryn Sand Co., Benoni, Transvaal, have halved the company's fuel costs. The concern previously employed American petrolengined vehicles. The Comets are oilers supplied through Leyland Albion (Africa), Ltd.
Morewear -cu.-yd. bodies are fitted, and the twin-ram tipping gear is of
Bennes Marrell pattern. The vehicles operate at a sand quarry, shuttling from the pit to the loading bins. The longest run is less than a mile.
In a 17i-hr. day, the vehicles run up to 100 trips. Turn-round time is quick and engines are hardly ever stationary. Because of the uneven surfaces over which the Comets travel, the higher gear ratios are seldom engaged.
