Tariff Reform—not Traffic Reform this time—is advanced a stage, so far as the evidence of engineers can help in that direction, by the publication of Volume TV of the Tariff Commission's report. This volume deals with the various sections of the engineerkg industry, and particular references to motorcars are summarised by us on pages 440 '10 442.

City of London Accidents.

Following upon the instructions from the Court of Common Council, the Commissioner of Police of the City of London has reported the number of accidents by vehicles, within the City, for the quarter ended the 3 tst December last, to be : total fatal, 6 tmotor vehicles 2, horsed vehicles 4); and total non-fatal, 351 (motor vehicks ii I, horsed vehicles 240).

"Mex" Spirit.

Shortly after the entry of a cargo of motor spirit from Mexico, we mentioned (issue of the loth December) that this new source of supply was one which would shortly come within the range of commercial interest. Sir Weetman Pearson, Bart., is behind the enterprise, and his very considerable experience of business affairs augurs well for the development of the fields in question. Tie is, at the "'resent time, away in Mexico, partly in reason of the fact that a fire rec(.ntlr occurred at the refinery, though we understand that this did not particularlv affect the stocks of spirit, or the spirit stills, so that the supplies which are of most direct interest to readers of this journal should continue to come forward with regularity, Sir Weetman Pearson is due back in England about April next.

Full particulars and quotations for this latest arrival in the spirit market may be obtained from the Bowring Petroleum Company, Limited, of 5 and 6, Minter Avenue, E.C.

The Manchester Show.

The Manchester Show (Belle Vue) will open a fortnight hence. Col. Crompton has consented to perform Else opening ceremony, and he can count upon a hearty reception in the north. Though not a Lancastrian, he is the next best thing—a Yorkshireman,

Belle Vue has many attractions it is spacious, and its proprietors, Messrs. John Jennison and Company, do things well. February, of course, is not Om best time of the year for cei-freso enjoyment, but there is a lot to be said in favour of an indoor show where attractive vehicles are pro

perly staged in a substantial building. This year's show, we understand, will be well heated.

A recent registration (private company) is the Pickering-Crewdson Motor Co., Ltd., with an authorised capital of ..i.;4,000, to carry on motor haulage " in West Africa, or elsewhere."

British Orders by Joseph Lyons.

Joseph Lyons, Ltd., the worldfamous caterers, whose steady extension since the days of the 1880 Paris Exhibition has been so consistently successful, has not been long in deciding that British-built goods demand attention as well as those from France. This powerful catering house has ordered 14 Laere vans, through Boon and Porter, Ltd., of Barnes, S.W. Several of these are now on the road, and naturally giving every satisfaction. We shall be much surprised if more Lacres are not required before long for tea distribution.

" Answers to Oueries " are this week crowded out, owing to pressure on our space. " Opinions from Others " are included.

Congratulations to Ivel Agricultural Motors, Limited, of 45, Great Marlborough Street, W., on its having been awarded the gold medal of the Italian Government, and a money prize, in respect of last year's Agricultural Motor Trials at Piacenza.

Laundry Vans.

Mr. Alexander Kennedy, the proprietor of the Castlebank Laundry, Anniesland, Glasgow, read an extremely interesting paper, on the subject of " Motors versus horses," at a recent conference of the West of Scotland Laundrymen. A copy of the paper is in our possession, through its compiler's courtesy, and we are at liberty to state that Mr. Kennedy was able to read numerous favourable letters from laundrymen who are already running motorvans, and was also able, from his own experiences to show that motors were the cheaper for so small a daily mileage per van as 30

Another Special Yorkshire.

The Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Company, of Vulcan Works, Pepper Road, Hunslet, Leeds, has recently taken quite a number of orders for vehicles adapted to fulfil special purposes. One of these, for the conveyance of vitriol, was illustrated by us three weeks ago, and we now reproduce herewith a similar vehicle with a special swivelling bolster fitted, and with a two-wheeled pole trailer behind. The combination is well arranged for the carriage of large water mains, the load depicted consisting of a particular batch of welded sted mains each weighing ti ton. Water-supply engineers are invited to note the economy and dispatch liar,: secured.

The South Wales Motor Transport and Trading Company, Limited, has established itself in Charles Street, Cardiff, and is making a speciality of the hiring of motorcars for travellers and doctors, as well as the undertaking of motor contracting for gcocis.

The matter of a motor fire-engine was recently discussed at the annual dinner of the Farnborough (Kent) Fire Brigade, when the chief officer, Captain A. Ferris, stated that the next machine they purchased would be of this type. It was not true, he added, that they were purchasing a " relic " from a neighbouring town.

A Consulting Combination.

We are advised that the consulting businesses of Messrs. Swinburne, Cooper and Baillie and Messrs. O'Gorman and Cozens-Hardy have been joined, and that they will be continued hereafter, under the style of Messrs. Swinburne, O'Gorman and Baillie, at 82, Victoria Street, Westminster, S.W.

International Competition for Agricultural Motors.

We understand that another international competition for the furtherance of agricultural motors is contemplated by the Italian Government. The contest comprises three groups: (a), freight-vehicles; (b), motors for driving agricultural machines, such as ploughs, reapers, etc.; (c) station

ary engines. Piacenza will be the scene of the trials. Dianlop Dubber (Far East) Company.

Mr. Arthur du Cros, M.P., presided at a meeting of shareholders in the Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Co., Ltd., on Monday last, when it was agreed to sell the exclusive rights to manufacture or import into Japan and other parts of Asia east of Burma, cycle and motor tires and rubber goods under the name of " Dunlop." Al the general meeting of the Doerkopp Company, of Bielefeld, held en the 3oth January, the directors denied that the automobile department had worked at a loss of Zto,000l the loss was " materially lower." That the company could pay " only " 17 per cent, arose from the general depression in all departments of the works, but especially from the bad year of the Graz branch, which had been affecled by protracted strikes. The automobile industry, the directors added, had undoubtedly a big future.

Piano Transport.

The collection, transport and delivery of pianos by motor vehicles continues apace, and one of the latest sales for this purpose, to Messrs. Hime and Addison, of Manchester, is by Sturmey Motors, Limited, of Coventry. We give an exterior view of the vehicle on this page. A similar van, but fitted with Lynton wheels (R. T. Smith's patent), was at the recent Edinburgh Show (in which connection see page 456).

ing sets, plugs, adapters, testing instruments, and special forms of incandescent tamps to suit different types of body construction. The L.C.C. Fire Brigade Committee has decided to place no mare orders for motor fire-engines for a time, in order that it may obtain report upon the comparative perfcrinances of those in use. Some interesting data should thus be rendered available, though the general superiority of motors is admitted, and other local authorities :iced not delay.

The Brussels Motor Show, 1910.

Our Berlin correspondent writes :It %vould be very interesting to know whether British firms intend to apply for space at the Brussels Motor Show which is being organised for 191o. Some of the leading German houses who make a speciality of industrial vehicles have already signified their intention of exhibiting; for instance, Buessing, N.A.G., Daimler-Marienfelde and the North German Motor and Automobile Works. 1 beg to point out that March 31st, toot), is the latest date for receiving applications. If British firms will exhibit at all, they 'night take steps to secure good positions and not wait until foreigners have had the pick. Catalogues Received.

We have received from the Bosch Magneto Company, Limited, of 23, Store Street, London, W.C., a new booklet describing in detail the company's latest introduction. This is a most compact form of high-tension magneto which, when working in conjunction with an equally-compact high-tension coil, constitutes a very practical form of dual ignition. The arrangement of wiring is very simple, and there is no necessity for separate distributor, switch, contact

breaker, or sparking plugs. The same set of plugs is in use, whether the engine be running on the hightension magneto or on the coil, the

latter of which is only used for starting purposes, or when it is necessary to run the engine at a slower speed than that for which the magneto is "limed." The sectional drawings and diagrams which are reproduced in this booklet make it extremely interesting to all users of motor vehicles, whilst, to those owners who have already taken steps to have the Bosch system of dual ignition fitted to their engines, the "identification" sheets, on which every detail part is illustrated, named, and numbered, will be of undoubted interest and value. The company will be pleased to forward a copy on request.
