manual GVW:3,000kg Payload: . Load volume: 5.8m In recent years, the Volkswagen Transporter has firmly established itself as one of the leading vans in the medium category displaying an all-round ability that makes it just as at home in the city as on the open road.

This strength is mainly down to those typically WV attributes of thorough engineering and tight build quality.

These may sound like obvious areas to focus on, but you would be surprised how many manufacturers fail to achieve this level of quality the result in this case is an extremely solid vehicle. But would our testers notice')

Driveline

Something of a mixed bag here. The engine came in for criticism thanks to its noise when cold, and while working hard in the upper rev range.

This contrasted sharply with the gear change; quick and short in throw, it allowed you to work the powerplant effectively. which noise aside provided enough torque and outright power to keep things moving briskly.

It also transferred this well on to the road, allowing for good traction and slip-free acceleration, partly assisted by the standard-fit traction control.

Dynamics

It may be reaching middle age, but time has had little effect on the Transporter's road manners.

The stable and forgiving nature of the suspension makes it a breeze to drive.

whether around town (where the accurate steering makes tight manoeuvring a stress-free affair) or on quick roads, Its surefooted and stable nature takes the stress out of long journeys too.

But our testers also remarked on the way it absorbed bumps and potholes without complaint, giving the Renault Trafic a run for its money in terms of quality of ride.

Cabin

The VW was rated as having the best interior in the group, with one driver going so far as to say it was "a huge step up in interior quality and design". It was seen a paragon of simplicity and clarity, with a control layout that was easy to familiarise yourself with.

Everything was where we expected it to be and clearly labelled, operating with a satisfying click and turn, which reflected the overall standard of fit and finish.

The driving position was also first-rate, with plenty of adjustment from the seat and the steering wheel, while storage was also well placed and generous.

On the move, engine noise aside, there was little sound intrusion thanks to the tight build quality and high level of soundproofing.

The verdict

If there was one van we expected to be well received, it was the VW. The company is noted for its commitment to build and design, and these factors didn't escape our testers. Comments such as "lovely clear instruments and solid controls" and "excellent build" sum up the overall strength that the Transporter brings to the table. It wasn't all good news, however.

The engine's refinement, or lack of it, is something that continues to blight the WV though once warmed up and on the move it settles down somewhat.
