DRIVERS and other transport staff are to benefit under a new redundancy and severance nay agreement, just signed by the Co-operative Wholesale Society and representatives of 39 unions. Altogether it will apply to 55,000 factory and distributive workers at all the Society's depots and manufacturing units.

The agreement lays down minimum periods of notice of dismissal if redundancy becomes inevitable after everything has been done to avoid it. These range from one week for a worker with 26 or more weeks' continuous service to six weeks for those with more than 20 Nears' service, Redundancy pay will be based on a worker's average earnings, excluding overtime and shift payments, during tho 12 weeks before his dismissal, instead of the more usual basic weekly wage rate. A man with two years' service who becomes redundant will get one week's pay, and one with 10 years' service six weeks. Above 10 years' service the scale gives an extra week's. pay for every year of service up to a maximum of 30 weeks' pay for 34 years.

The Union of Shop Distributive and Allied Workers, which was mainly responsible for the agreement. has described it as "a triumph of collective bargaining ". It will he followed up by approaches to retail co-operative societies for similar schemes.
