ONCE again, trailers will provide the main interest for commercialvehicle users at the Smithfield how, which is being held at Earls :ourt, London, from December 7-11, lthough operators of light vans will Lo doubt wish to see the new Turner wo-cylindered two-stroke oil engine on tailid 74.
This engine, which was described in 'he Commercial Motor on November 0, has a capacity of 1.4 litres and a ,ominal output of 37 b.h.p. at 3,000 .p.m. It is being manufactured in this ountry by The Turner Manufacturing ;o., Ltd., Villiers Street, Wolverhampon, under licence from the Jenbacli
Austria.
One of the most interesting new xhibits will be the Wheatley-Bonnel railer, which F. W. Wheatley (Trailers), ..td„ Padholme Road, Peterborough, re to show on Stand 211. This incororates a patented forecarriage which nables a light tractor to haul heavy aads, adjustment of two locking pins istributing the weight over the rear rheels of the tractor.
Wheatley's other exhibits will include version of their Gloucester trailer fled with special doors to facilitate rain handling.
A comprehensive range of trailers for arrying livestock will be shown on ta nal 169 by G. C. Smith (Coachworks), Long Whatton, Loughborough. One exhibit, a double-decker suitable for pigs or sheep, can be easily converted to provide sufficient headroom for horses or cattle. Loading can be effected at either the side or rear.
Another Smith exhibit was designed principally for carrying bacon pigs in varying number, although it can be adapted to provide show pigs with the comparative luxury of separate stalls. The roof of this trailer is removable. Lightweight trailers suitable for carrying, amongst other things, milk churns and bottled milk, are also to be shown.
A new product of Whitlock Bros., Ltd., Great Yeldham, Essex (Stand 72), is a transport box which can be fitted in a matter of seconds to the hydraulic lift arms of a tractor. Measuring 6 ft. 6 in. long and 2 ft. 11 in. wide, the box can lift and carry up to 15 cwt.
Whitlocks' other exhibits will include a 5-ton three-way hydraulic tipping trailer, new versions of their all-steel Hardiway trailers, and a utility trailer chassis.
One of two new trailers to be shown by Taskers of Andover (1932), Ltd., Andover, Hants, on Stand 71, is a simply constructed two-wheeler designed for use over rough country. The other trailers on the stand will have capacities ranging from 7 cwt. to 5 tons.
On Stand 261, Smith's Electric Vehicles, Ltd. (now Smith's Delivery Vehicles, Ltd.), Team Valley, Gateshead-on-Tyne, 11, will again exhibit a mobile butcher's shop based on an N.C.B. battery-electric chassis.
Fifty 2-cwt. sacks of grain, it is claimed by the manufacturers, can be loaded on to a lorry by two men in )0 minutes with the aid of the Teleloader which will be shown by Telehoist, Ltd., Swindon Lane, Cheltenham, Glos, on Stand 163.
The principal features of the haulage tractor which Garner Mobile Equipment, Ltd., North Acton Road, London, N.W.10, are to exhibit on Stand 205, are claimed to be its low running and maintenance costs. Powered by a J.A.P. petrol engine—of 7 h.p. or 10 h.p. capacity—it has a speed range of m.p.h. in low gear to 8 m.p.h. in top gear. Its consumption is said to be a gallon in 3-4 hours.
Spenborough Engineering Co., Ltd., Union Road, Heckmondwike, Yorks, are to show a comprehensive range of tipping equipment on Stand 294.
Making its first official appearance in public will be the Boughton H02 heavy-duty totally enclosed winch with sprag manufactured by T. T. Boughton and Sons, Ltd., Amersham Common, Bucks (Stand 182). The successful application of this unit to log clearing in forestry work was described in The Commercial Motor on November 13.
