AMONG the main causes of accidents in Glasgow are the failure of drivers to keep their vehicles to the near side or to the proper traffic lane, lack of compliance with traffic signs and signals, inattention, crossing road junctions without due care. and mechanical defects and failure.
D2 These observations were made in reports submitted to Glasgow Corporation's Special Committee on Accident Prevention by the general manager of the transport department, Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, and the chief constable of the city.
Bus passengers were not entirely blameless, accidents being caused through carelessness in boarding and alighting.
A recommendation has been made that more intensive propaganda be undertaken in the police divisions with the co-operation of the transport department and other bodies in an effort to reduce accidents.
