Parliamentary question addressed to Mr. Noel-Baker, Rear-Admiral Bearuish last week asked when it was intended to introduce legislation imposing penalties on operators of commercial vehicles who surrendered tyres which were worn to an extent that rendered them unfit for retreading. Was it not the case, he inquired, that the need for such legislation had been generally agreed to for some months past by the Ministry of Supply, Tyre Control?

UNDERPAYMENT OFFENCES 1N.ECENTLY, in the Sheriff's Court at Duns, Berwickshire, Mr. John Campbell, of Messrs. John and George Campbell, of Oxton, Berwickshire, employers in the haulage industry, was prosecuted by the Ministry of Labour and National Service, under the Road Haulage Wages Act, 1938, for underpaying four male workers and failing to post notices. The defendant pleaded guilty. He was fined 21 on each underpayment charge and Li for failing to post notices—a total of 25.
