Industrial action could be looming at parcels giant DHL Express unless it delivers an improved pay offer. Jennifer Ball reports.

PARCELS SPECIALIST DHL Express faces the threat of industrial action by its 4,500 workers, including drivers, over pay. The GMB union has balloted staff at DHL's 140 depots to see if they want to vote on industrial action.

The GMB says DHL bosses have also slashed overtime rates and need to improve health and safety practices.

Mick Rix, GMB national executive officer, says: -DHL Express has been intransigent and has failed to communicate with the GMB over various important and urgent concerns of our members.

"Consequently we have made the decision to start the process of balloting for industrial action for all affected members in DHL Express. This comes after GMB members voted in a ballot to reject the pay offer of 3%."

A company spokesman says: "DHL does not believe it is in dispute with the GMB and is disappointed with the comments made.

"The domestic parcel operation of DHL has a collective agreement in place with the GMB, and will address any issues arising within the framework of this agreement."

The result of the consultative ballot was due to be announced as CM went to press.

GMB members are to balloted on strike action after more than 90% of NO truck drivers at a Christian Salvesen depot in Bellshill, Lanarkshire, rejected new rotas which would require them to work weekends for the first time.

The warehouse works for the Morrisons supermarket chain.
