Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LEEDS HAULIER Archbold Logistics says efficiency gains through reduced empty running helped boost its pre-tax profits by 57% to £96,458 in the year ending 31 December 2004. Turnover rose 2')/0 to £18m.

Boss Stuart Archbold says 2004 was "a competitive year" but the business focused on improving its gross profit.

"We looked at reducing empty running and carried out analyses of all our vehicle movements," he explains. "Our sales were up slightly so alongside improving efficiency of the vehicles we were able to improve our gross profit. "Our customers, especially in the manufacturing industry, are finding things tough and can't afford to pay higher transport costs so we have to continue to improve the efficiency of our trucks if we want to improve profitability."

The £90,458 profit represents a margin of around 0.5%.

Parent company Archbold Holdings lost f263,290; down from a profit of f 116,268, a year earlier.

It cites lower than expected sales at its Shopbox Business System division. It hopes sales of its refrigerated container product will increase in the coming year.

Turnover rose 3% to f20.7m.
