Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A fatal road accident on the 1/15 has prompted a coroner to call for a

change in the rules on truck mirrors. David Harris reports.

A GLOUCESTERSHIRE coroner has taken the unusual step of asking the government to change the law to ensure that trucks carrying overhanging loads are equipped with extensions on their rear-view mirrors.

Alan Crick more is to write to the Department for Transport about mirror extensions after conducting an inquest into the circumstances surrounding a fatal accident on the M5 in 2003.

The inquest heard that Robert Ogden was driving a Renault artic near Junction ha of the motorway when he moved from the inside lane into the middle lane. He was carrying a caravan which overhung the trailer's sides so at first he did not see a Volvo convertible that was in his way.

Ogden immediately moved back into the inside lane when he realised what was happening, but by then the Volvo had moved into the outside lane, forcing a Renault Megane to take evasive action. Passenger Christopher Paul Jones, 33, of Overbrook Road, Gloucester was thrown from the car and died from head injuries.

Jones's fiancée, Amy Lander, who was driving the Megane, said: "Chris was trying to get his [the Volvo driver's] attention by waving and shouting.

"We went over the rumble strips and onto the grass. The next thing I remember is just spinning round and round. I was grabbing the wheel to try and keep it straight. I looked around and Chris wasn't there. I shouted his name and saw him in the road. There was blood everywhere."

Coroner's officer Paul Boak said the coroner's decision to make a recommendation to the Department for Transport about a change in the law "was not a common occurrence" but was allowed under rule 43 of the Coroner's Regulations.
