• Local authority chiefs look set to back down on plans to ban mobile transport cafes from a busy stretch of the A34 after a Hurry of protests from truckers (CM 21-27 July).
Cherwell District Council's environmental committee is looking into the health and safety implications of allowing the fast-food caravans to remain in the laybys under a licence scheme.
It originally wanted to ban them completely, but was forced to re-think after truckers warned they would invade local town centres in search of cafes. And more than 12 traders who operate the mobile catering units, between Bicester and Oxford, submitted a petition against the ban with almost 13,000 names.
Under a licensing system, the council would be able to ensure the catering units operate within a strict code of conduct or lose the licence which allows them to trade.
