ITTINICIPAL bus enterprises in ALL South Wales are developing rapidly. The Cardiff Corporation, the fleet of which, with Dennis chassis as the standard pattern, has expanded from six to forty buses in a little over two years, has now resolved to open a new long-distance route. This will consist of an alternative to the existing Cardiff-Newport route which constitutes a monopoly for the corporation as the result of private enterprises having been bought out.

The new service aims at providing facilities for the people in villages lying between Cardiff and Newport, but situated south of the main road. For this purpose the buses will make a detour at Rumney and follow the lower, sea-level, road for some miles before rejoining the main way west of Newport.

The stage fares on the CardiffNewport route are, too, to be reduced, consequent on a petition to the council by the inhabitants of the villages served en route.

Newport Corporation is also to extend both its fleet of buses and services by the institution of extra-boundary services between (a) Newport and Caerleon, via Golderoft Common, (b) Newport and Llantarnam (an hourly service during the day) and (c) Christchurch Road to Risen Road. These additional services are to be established under the newly obtained powers of the authority under which the assent of the local councils concerned in the routes had to be obtained.

Merthyr Borough Council is anxious to extend the operation of the municipal services and has applied to the Gellygaer Urban District Council for sanction to run vehicles from Merthyr to Den. It has been reported that, in the event of sanction being given, the Merthyr authority is assured of from 300-500 passengers daily, by reason of the fact that many of the workmen who reside in Merthyr have to journey to the Doi collieries.

Merthyr Borough Council has decided to run buses daily for workmen, between Merthyr and Treharris. Weekly tickets are to be issued at 48,13d. each a minimum number of passengers having been guaranteed.
