Local authority representatives will meet motorway sero station operators and drivers' leaders within the next inth to discuss ways of easing the growing shortage of ernight parking for trucks.

The forum, which will also be attended by the Highways ency, will draw up a list of proposals to present to governint ministers later this year.

Jack Crossfield, secretary of the Drivers Action ivernent (DAM), which campaigns for drivers' rights and proved safety in road haulage, says: "It's a matter of find; out who can do what, and what is achievable. Transport nisters don't want to come to a forum and have everybody rowing around ideas; they want to see proper proposals." He adds that there is a growing recognition that the ernight parking issue can no longer be ignored, particularly the Working Time Directive is likely to intensify driver ortages from 2005.

The need for a forum was agreed after DAM presented a port to the Parliamentary Transport Select Committee last ar. This showed that only 44% of local authorities taking rt in DAM's survey provided overnight parking for trucks. DAM wants to see overnight truck parks becoming a stanrd feature of any new industrial development. It believes at land attached to existing industrial estates should also adapted for parking use. 'It's about having a strategic In for the whole of England and Wales to deal with this ate," says Crossfield.
