A SUB-STANDARD anti-freeze or an inaccurate coolant mixture I causes of liner corrosion and pitting on wet liner engines, accordi to service manager Volvo (GB) Ltd T. Mace.

Volvo's research division arrived at its conclusion after a residue of running-in coolant re mained in the water gallery at it had been drained. When 1 correct mixture was added to I residue, it combined to prod!, the wrong strength mix.

The company is concerr that many anti-freeze solutic do not comply with British St dards and cannot produce satisfactory coolant — Vo recommends 60 parts of wa to 40 of coolant.

In an extensive check operator level, only one eng was running at the proper r and the problems were wors€ hard-water areas.

But the use of a water softer engine pack is not the ansvv according to Mr Mace. "Wh the pack is new there is a sur of mixture into the water gal le but it gradually weakens. A n pack causes another surge that the mixture cannot be c( sistent," he explained.

Pitting is only discover when the engine is stripped some other reason, but provid the pitting is not deeper than per cent of the liner thickne replacement is unnecessary.

Mr Mace's advice is to turn I liner to take the pitted secti away from the water gallery.
