THE GENERAL heavy goods vehicle population in Great Britain fell by over one per cent last year, against a rise of over three per cent in the number of all road vehicles.
According to the Department of Transport, there was an increase in the number of road vehicles from 1979's 18.6m to 19,2m, while the stock of general goods vehicles fell from 1.697m to 1.678m.
Predictably, the recession has prompted a much steeper decline in the number of larger goods vehicles, and the drop in vehicles over three tons unladen was 5.3 per cent, from 377,000 to 357,000.
There was a 0.6 per cent increase in the number of vehicles under 1.5 tons unladen (from 57,000 to 58,000), while those between 1.6 and three tons dropped from 167,000 to 161,000 a reduction of 3.6 per cent.
