C. W. Bridge (C. W. Bridge (General Haulage) Ltd, Huntingdon) has been elected chairman of the eastern area committee of the RHA: H. A. Williams (County Borough Builders Supply Co Ltd, Leight-on-Sea) and R. Rushen (W. Harris (Chelmsford Haulage) Ltd, Chelmsford) are vice-chairmen.
Allan S. Roils, 35, has been appointed chief assistant traffic manager of Crosville Motor Service.
Desmond Fletcher, formerly finance director of Tyne and Wear PTE, has now taken over as director-general, at a salary of more than £11,000 a year, having been selected from a short list of six. He has promised as his top priorities: building the Metro system, and making the buses run on time. A Londoner, he moved to Whitley Bay in 1969, having been in private consultancy and before that chief accountant for Leicester City Transport. Mr Fletcher succeeds Dr Tony Ridley, who has left to build and run a new Rapid Transit System in Hong Kong.
Obituaries
We record with regret the deaths of John Robert Noon and John Preen.
Mr Noon, 48, of Cosnall, Notts, was a well-known haulier and farmer in the East Midlands.
Mr Preen, of Ravensthorpe, Northants, joined Rootes Motors in 1961 as chief fleet sales executive, and in 1968 became fleet and leasing director, a position he held until his retirement a year ago. He was a Freeman of the City of London and also held the OBE.
