Figures issued by the Sociey of Motor Manufacturers md Traders show that althmgh the industry was still in he black, production figures ,agged.

So far this year the motor ndustry has contributed £1,036m to the national balance of payments against £.880 last year with commercial vehicles making up £350m of the total.

Last year the figure was £248m. Imports have also risen in the past six months compared with the same period last year. The figure has risen from £57m to £62m this year.

Britain's total motor exports last month were £281m — 87 per cent more than our motor imports.
