HERE is general agreement that the bus industry needs a amprehensive review, Dr John Gilbert, Minister of Transport, ild last week.

Speaking to Dudley Trades Council the Minister said that tere is a wide choice open on the way that the industry can evelop.

Transport already had many tcets. Part of it is a nationased industry, another part is nder the control of the Meopolitan Counties, and there re also municipal operators some of them very small) and here is also the private sector. "Given that transport has so iany facets, nor yet is the ature of bus operation such hat it cannot be controlled by monolithic industry, it will e obvious that there are no slutions which we can just take off the peg," said the Minister.

"Our solutions will have to start with the nature of the problem. In all this we must never loose sight of the fact that the bus industry is a very large employer of people.

"They will want to see that any reorganisation makes sense to them and for the passengers whom they serve."
