Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Seania Vabis, Werth.lje, Sweden, and both are reported to be selling in large numbers in Sweden and its export markets. The smaller vehicle is the L51, which ii a four-wheeler suitable for gross weights of 10 tons. The other model is available as either a fourwheeler (L71), or a six-wheeler (LS7I), the gross weights being 131 tons and 17f tons respectively. A wide range of wheelbases and axle ratios is specified and all vehicles are powered by

oil engines.

A D442 four-cylindered direct injection unit is fitted to the L51.

This engine has a 115 mm. bore and 150 mm. stroke, giving a capacity of 6.23 litres, and develops 100 b.h.p. at the governed speed of 2,200 r.p.m. Torque output is 280 113.-ft. at 1,000 r.p.rn. It has twin cylinder heads with Stellite-faced valves and seats, and a one-piece cast-iron cylinder block and crankcase. in which wet liners arc fitted.

The aluminium-alloy pistons, with combustion spaces machined into the heads, have three compression and two oil-control rings. Helical gearing from the front of the crankshaft drives the camshaft, the fuel-injection pump and the gear-type oil pump.

A 14-in.-diameter dry clutch transfers the engine torque to the five-speed gearbox. This box has synchromesh engagement for four ratios and is mounted as a unit with the engine. Three sets of ratios may be obtained, one set giving a top-gear overdrive of 1.1.77 to 1. All bearings are pressure lubricated and there is a magnetic filter on the drain plug.

A two-speed auxiliary box, mounted in place of the propeller-shaft centre bearing, is also available, and this has constant-mesh gears and ratios of 1,47 and Ito I.

Needle-roller bearings are fitted to all propeller shaft joints, and the centre bearing, when an auxiliary box is not supplied, is a self-aligning, rubber. mounted unit. The rear axle has spiralbevel final-drive gearing with optional ratios of 6.14, 5.63 and 5.11 to 1. The BI2 , pinion is straddle-mounted for rigidity and silent operation, and the half-shafts are fully floating.

Pressed-steel frame side members are flat and parallel and are braced by five cross-members with diagonal members behind the engine. Semi-elliptic springs are fitted at the front and rear, with 10leaf auxiliary springs at the rear.

The Lockheed two-leading-Shoe hydraulic brakes have Bendix Hydrovac assistance and the total frictional area is 530 sq. in. The hand lever operates a drum transmission brake behind the main gearbox.

Cam and double-roller steering is mounted for a left-hand driving position on all models. The electrical system is 24v.

The cab, which is an optional extra, has seating for three people, and is mainly of timber construction, with metal outer panelling and heavy insulation between the double skin. The driver's seat is fully adjustable and a heater is provided.

The approximate chassis weight with cab is 3f tons and four wheclbases, from 12 ft. 6 in. to 16 ft. 6 in., are available. Standard tyre equipment is 9.00-20-in., which gives a maximum width of 7 ft. 3 in.

Larger and more powerful in every respect, but employing the same simple and robust construction, is the L71 range. This is powered by the D642 six-cylindered oil engine, which has a cubic capacity of 9.35 litres, but in other respects is similar to the fourcyl indered unit.

It develops 150 b.h.p. at 2,200 r.p.rn. and has a maximum torque output of 420 lb.-ft. Twin oil-bath air cleaners are fitted. and the single-dry-plate clutch is 16 in. in diameter.

A larger five-speed synchromesh gearbox is bolted to the engine, this having direct top gear and a low ratio of 7.70 to 1. The auxiliary gearbox is available as an optional extra. Four ratios are specified for the spiral-bevel final drive, the highest being 4.67 to 1, and the axle case is a steel pressing.

Bendix-Westinghouse air braking is standard equipment, a twin-cylindered engine-driven compressor supplying the power through large dual reservoirs.

Trailer-brake connections and a tyre-inflation line can be supplied tyre-inflation line can be supplied

cania -a is with this system. The total

brake frictional area is 700. sq. brake frictional area is 700. sq.

in. Alternatively, Bendix Hydrovac equipment as fitted to the L51, may be specified. The hand lever it linked to a 12-in.-diameter drum transmission brake.

The total chassis and cab weight is 5 tons and five wheelbases are available, ranging from 11 ft. to 16 ft. 3 in. All models have 11.00-201st tyres, with twins at the rear.

A similar specification applies to the six-wheeled LS71 range, but chassis weights and lengths are increased.

The rear bogie has a trailing axle, the wheels of which arc supported on pivoted arms which also carry the rear ends of the suspension springs.
