Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Commercial Motor Show will mark the introduction of several new heavy-duty batteries of various makes. They will represent the result of extensive research and development conducted by British manufacturers to provide efficient and strong lightweight batteries for commercial vehicles, especially those powered by oil engines.

in the past, thick plates have been used to withstand the abuse likely to be met both in use and in handling. Experience has shown, however, that the inferior performance obtained from thick-plate batteries necessitates greater use of the starter, with an adverse effect on battery life.

Thinner but stronger .Plates are now employed, and improved wooden separators, or porous rubber separators with glass-wool pads, are incorporated in batteries to be exhibited by C.A.V., Ltd., Chloride Batteries, Ltd., The Edison Swan Electric Co., Ltd., Park Bros., Ltd., Messrs. Peto and Radford, Tungstone Products, Ltd., and The Young Accumulator Co., Ltd.

Fibrak separators with nitrous-felt retainer mats are used in the latest battery produced by Oldham and Son, Ltd., which will also be on view at the Show.

These new features contribute towards longer life, with increased efficiency and reduced internal resistance. Reductions in weight and bulk are so iubstantial that for the first time it is possible to fit heavy-duty batteries to light commercial vehicles that have previously had to rely on car-type equipment.

Batteries of tubular and flat-plate construction, using rubber separators and glass-wool mats, will be exhibited by Park Bros., Ltd. C.A.V., Ltd., will be showing an entirely new range of alkaline batteries.
