Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Truck drivers who break 30mph speed limits by as little as 5mph are unaware of the potentially fatal consequences to children, says the Institute of Advanced Motorists, It warns that a child hit at 35mph is far more likely to die than a child hit at 30mph.

Bryan Lunn, chief examiner of the IAM, which includes truck drivers among its 110,000-strong membership, says speed cameras may be "de-sensitising" many drivers.

"I would hate to think that lorry drivers under pressure are tempted to make up their time by putting their foot down when they are driving in areas without speed cameras," he adds. "Drivers should watch their speed, whether or not they are going to be caught on camera."

The warning follows Department of Transport research published this summer, which shows that 55% of two-axle trucks break the 30mph speed limits on urban roads compared with 65% of cars.

The figures also show that on non-urban roads, 88% of antics break the 50mph speed limit on dual carriageways and 76% of them break to 40mph speed limit on single carriageways.
