SIGN outside the Grand Hall )Iympia last week read ;gequip '81 — THE trade

Ideed, all the exhibition ds at Garagequip '81 were n by the beginning of Sepber with a few latecomers hoping to be accommod; and, covering 11,000sqm he aging but magnificent Id Hall of Olympia, the show ;led 135 stands.

ivance registrations from visitors three weeks before opening totalled 9,500, thus ling the total attendance re for the last show in 1979. the show's opening, Junior isport Minister Kenneth ke said that the equipment ;how was a tribute to the inuing quality of British enering. On safety, he stated the Garage Equipment Asation had a real contribution lake in an effort to cut down idents. Vehicle owners

should also have greater sense of responsiblity towards defects, according to Mr Clarke. "There can never be a substitute for regular maintenance by vehicle owners and operators," he said.

During his tightly scheduled tour of the exhibition, Mr Clarke spent some time on the Laycock Engineering stand where he showed interest in Car Checkwear Mk2, the company's main new exhibit. He operated the unit to see for himself how it showed up wear in the steering and suspension joints on used vehicles.

Mr Clarke's comments about safety standards (or lack of them) were endorsed by a garage proprietor who claimed that maintenance is being ignored by many of his customers in these recessionary times.

Over a cup of coffee at Olympia's vastly overpriced cafeteria, he toldme he likes to come to Garagequip "to see what I can't afford to buy for my garage".

As for the exhibition itself, the NORFI exhaust gas extraction system, recently launched by Secomak Air Products Ltd, was on show for the first time. The new system is designed to improve working conditions and safeguard the health of mechanics and production workers involved in the servicing or manufacture of petrol and diesel-engined vehicles.

NORFI is based on overhead ducting, in which a negative air pressure is constantly maintained by an extraction fan. TWO types of ducting are available, in either galvanised sheet steel or extruded aluminium modules, in a range of standard lengths and cross-sectional areas.

The underside of both duct types is made up of two continuous neoprene rubber strips, and discharges the exhaust gases into the duct. The other end of the hose is simply pushed or clamped onto the vehicle exhaust pipe.

A design advantage of the NORFI system is that the hose to-duct sealing system and travelling gear allows the hoses to be moved along the duct from one repair bay to another. This provides flexibility and eliminates the need for an individual extraction hose at every servi bay.
