Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE most popular model from DAF's UN range is the FT2200 DU 4x2 tractive unit and recently CM staff visited the company's UK headquarters at Marlow, Bucks, to follow a routine 150,000km (90,000 miles) service on it.

DAF's servicing system is based on four schemes, each one tailored to meet the needs of indDvidual vehicles depending on their annual mileage and use. Scheme 1 is designed for off-road vehicles, tippers and concrete mixers and vehicles covering up to 50,000km (30,000 miles) per year : schemes 2, 3 and 4 are designed for vehicles covering 50,000 100,000km (30,00060,000 miles), 100,000-150,000 km (60,000 90,000 miles) and then beyond 150,000km (90,000 miles) per year respectively.

For vehicles on more demanding duties, such as constant stop-start town delivery work, DAF recommends that the appropriate mileage scheme be adapted, probably by reducing the service intervals, to suit the particular vehicle application.

The service on our vehicle was taken from Scheme 3, which covers the distances commonly returned by 32tonners operating in the UK. In the scheme vehicles are only required for major servicing at 25,000km (15,000-mile) intervals, lubrication and regular vehicle checks being left to the operator to do and so minimise the time the vehicle is away from his depot.

The 150,000Iun (90,000-mile) or "L" service is one of the most comprehensive in the schedule covering most of the items from the more minor services. It is generally reckoned to be comfortably completed in 12.5 hours and apart from the labour costs which must be charged at the local rates the operator will need two front hub seals (£1.44 each); power-steering fluid filter (£0,61); oil filter (£1.27); fuel filter (£2.73); four brake diaphragms (£4.12 each); and two rocker cover gaskets (£0.85).

The following quantities of oil and fluid are also required: engine oil 18 litres (4gal); gearbox oil 13 litres (2.8gal); differential oil 18.5 litres (4.1gal); hydraulic clutch fluid 1 litre (1.8pt); steering fluid 5 litres (1.1gal); and brake anti-freeze 0.25 litres (0.4pt).

Apart from the photographs there are a number of points that should be drawn to the fitters' attention before servicing the DAF.

E All the bolts on the vehicle are to a metric size so make sure you have the correct spanners.

When draining the gearbox and splitter remove both the drain plugs; if you do not, the dirty oil that may be left in the gearbox will immediately contaminate any fresh oil.

C The clutch release shaft has a grease nipple at both sides of the bellhousing; do not forget the one on the offside just above the clutch slave cylinder.

.0 When re-setting the torques on the spring " U " bolts make sure that the unit is loaded, either by coupling to a trailer or using a load simulator on the fifth wheel.
