SCOTTISH hauliers and union leaders last week signed a new deal which it is hoped will bring long-term peace in the industry. The agreement, to set up a joint industrial coundl, was signed in Glasgow in the offices of the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service.

Officers of the service have worked with both sides since the strike by lorry drivers throughout Scotland in Octo ber. Scotland has led the way for similar deals to be set up throughout Britain.

Stewart Dunlop, chairman of the Road Haulage Association in Scotland, which has 1,000 member firms employing 5,000 drivers, described the agreement as a "major step forward" in preventing a recurrence of the disruption last year.

Peter Talbot, commercial group secretary of the TGWU, felt this deal would open up a new era for "fragmented road haulage industry." But he ruled out any possibility of a national agreement and said the union preferred regional agreements.

Leslie Whittaker, Scottish manager of ACAS, said the success of the services conciliation efforts in Scotland since it was created 12 months ago was better than the British average.
