Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TO meet increasing demands for the carriage of cattle and sheep between Bolton railway station and the town's slaughterhouse, d'Arcy, Ltd., Bolton, transferred an A-licence vehicle from T. Worthington, trading as Johnson Swales, to their own company, knowing that the vehicle had been redundant since July, 1957.

This was admitted by Mr. H. Robinson, for d'Arey, in an application before Mr. J. R. Lindsay, North Western 'Deputy Licensing Authority, on Tuesday. They sought an additional A-licence vehicle to carry livestock to Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire, Stafford and Cumberland. The application was opposed by the British Transport Commission.

Mr. Robinson said that at the time of the transfer,, which cost d'Arey £450, they were unaware that the correct procedure for increasing their fleet's tonnage was to apply to the Licensing Authority.

Mr. W. Dudley, manager of R. Gill, Ltd., slaughterers, said serious delays had occurred at the Bolton railhead due to insufficient transport facilities for their livestock.

For British Railways, Mr. R. D. Webb said they had no objection to the carriage of livestock from the station to the slaughterhouse, but a B licence, restricting work to a five-mile radius, would. meet the applicants' need.

The application was refused.

TOUGH NEW SEAT UPHOLSTERY

1-1. A FABRIC which is fire-resistant,

liquid repellent, insect-proof and hard wearing was introduced on Tuesday by Courtaulds, Ltd., 16 St. Martin's-leGrand, London, E.C.I. It is claimed to be entirely suitable for bus, coach and car upholstery, and is called Duracour.

The material is made from viscose Duracol yarn, and is, in effect, " spotwelded " at the intersecting points of the weave, thus allowing the cloth to breathe." The fabric has a special resinous backing and face finish, and is available in 15 colours and 18 designs.

It is strong, supple and lends itself to manipulation. It can be sponged, drycleaned and heat-set. It will not fray, thus avoiding wastage in cutting, and the colours are spun-dried and proof against fading. The retail price is about 17s. 6d. per yard, 48 in. wide.

REVENUE DOWN 06,500 A YEAR

THE growth of television is costing Chester Transport Department £8,500 year in lost revenue. The increasing popularity of private transport is reducing receipts by another £8,000 a year. This estimate is made by Mr. H. J. Hooley, general manager, in his annual report and has, he says, been accepted by the Traffic Commissioners.

Between May and December last year, television licences in the Chester district rose from 25,000 to 27,500, car licences from 5,117 to 6,004, and motorcycle and scooter licences from 1,896 to 2,427.
