ROAD TAX REVENUE EXCEEDS £500M.

TAXES paid by road users in 1957 topped £500m. for the first time, licence income alone rising to over £100m. These facts are contained in the 1958 edition of "Basic Road Statistics" (British Road Federation, Is.). Total expenditure upon roads last year was £120m., including payments for administration. A new section of this annual indicates the extent of new road construction and improvements, whilst other tables are concerned with registration statistics. In September, 1957, there were 237,570 oilengined vehicles in use, representing 18.l per cent, of the total. The number of trams still in operation dropped from 2,043 in 1956 to 1,612 last year.

B.R.S. ITALIAN RUN

AN £8,000 machine arrived at the Cone Automatic Machine Co., Aldridge, Staffs, on Monday, after travelling from Milan on a vehicle from the Walsall depot of British Road Services. The load had been taken to Milan six weeks earlier for an exhibition. The trip was described as an experiment which may be repeated.
