W 0 tyre developments were 1 announced at the opening of the Commercial Motor Show. Tbd Super Tufway cover with a nylon casing and bold tread pattern was introduced by the India Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd., for use on rough surfaces. The centre of the tread is reinforced so-that wear is evened whether the tyfe runs on unmade ground or hard roads.
The Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Co. (Great Britain), Ltd., now offer a nylon
carcass tyre with a double air chamber. Should the outer .chamber be punctured, sudden complete collapse of the tyre is prevented as the inner chamber does not
deflate. •
It is stated that in this condition the tyre can be run for 100 miles, largely obviating the need to carry a spare.
ROAD TAX REVENUE EXCEEDS £500M.
TAXES paid by road users in 1957 topped £500m. for the first time, licence income alone rising to over £100m. These facts are contained in the 1958 edition of "Basic Road Statistics" (British Road Federation, Is.). Total expenditure upon roads last year was £120m., including payments for administration. A new section of this annual indicates the extent of new road construction and improvements, whilst other tables are concerned with registration statistics. In September, 1957, there were 237,570 oilengined vehicles in use, representing 18.l per cent, of the total. The number of trams still in operation dropped from 2,043 in 1956 to 1,612 last year.
B.R.S. ITALIAN RUN
AN £8,000 machine arrived at the Cone Automatic Machine Co., Aldridge, Staffs, on Monday, after travelling from Milan on a vehicle from the Walsall depot of British Road Services. The load had been taken to Milan six weeks earlier for an exhibition. The trip was described as an experiment which may be repeated.
