deterioration of public transport services in Yorkshire" is to be conducted by Yorkshire Rural Community Council. This decision was taken last week following a report by Mr. A. Trotter, secretary of Northumberland Rural Community Council.

He said a survey in his area showed. that of 55 villages with village halls, 25 per cent, had no bus after 6.30 p.m., 15 per cent. had only one bus each day, and some had no bus service at all. The logical answer was for country buses to carry mails and be subsidized for the work.

Mr. Trotter also suggested a direct Government subsidy for rural transport, together with exemption from fuel tax for small operators. The position in Yorkshire might become serious in a year or so, he added, but country people had a right to a basic amount of transport.

The County Association of Parish Councils in Shropshire are also setting up a special committee to investigate rural bus services, in which reductions of 10 per cent, have been proposed. The National Farmers' Union, National Union of Agricultural Workers, Women's Institutes and the Rural Councils' Association have each been asked to nominate two members. The committee will collect information and make suggestions.
